Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2010 – An unprecedented winter storm has forced the closure of many schools across the Thames Valley school district tomorrow for the third straight day, Education Director Bill Tucker announced today.6 T8 y2 T# E r( I

All schools and facilities in Middlesex and Elgin Counties, including London, Strathroy, Alymer and St. Thomas will be closed tomorrow.

However, a decision on whether to open schools tomorrow in Oxford County will be made first thing in the morning. Oxford County has been spared the worst effects of the storm, but weather patterns could change overnight.

The decision to close Oxford schools will depend in part on whether school buses are operating Wednesday. Families and staff in Oxford County should monitor their school websites for updates.

“The safety of our students and staff is paramount,” said Tucker, noting that inclement weather is expected to continue through tomorrow and police have urged motorists to stay off roads in many parts of the district.

Conditions were so severe in London that public transit was cancelled and city services have been reduced to a minimum for the rest of today and tomorrow. The University of Western Ontario and Fanshawe College will also be closed Wednesday.: Y# t$ Q& V' q" H

But some areas of the school district have not felt the full effects of this historic winter storm. “I certainly understand why some families are wondering why we have to close the entire school system,” says Director Tucker. “But our staff live throughout the district and may not be able to reach their schools safely.”

The TVDSB relies on Environment Canada weather forecasts, the input from Southwestern Student Transportation Services, collaboration with the Catholic board, as well as reports from the 27 municipalities within the school district. % H, L- f3 F* B8 [. e
